It is common knowledge that internet-based audio transmission, including phone calls, instant messages, and web conferencing, is completed on an IP network. In absence of security safeguards, eavesdropping or interception can easily happen anytime.

In purchasing communications products, a business must consider network security as the first priority. To safeguard communications security, New Rock’s gateway has released (from version V346) TLS and SRTP for audio signaling message encryption and media encryption.

The transport layer security (TLS) protocol provides confidentiality and data integrity for communications between two applications for secure and reliable transmission.

Following the SIP call setup, the media stream is transmitted by RTP between two talking terminals. SRTP is also known as secure real-time transport protocol.

Typical application I: encryption of intranet registration

For internal audio communications, all terminals are registered to the IP-PBX. Using the TLS, the IP-PBX serves as the TLS server, while the voice gateway, IP phones and softphones become TLS clients. Independent encryption negotiation takes place between the IP-PBX and any terminal.

Typical application II: encryption of internet registration

Networking can be expanded beyond the corporate LAN. For security purposes, network isolation between the IP-PBX and the external network terminal is established to prevent direct access of signaling and media. Signaling and media are transmitted via SBC. Segment encryption and negotiation between the IP-PBX and SBC, and SBC and external network devices are available.
