How SIP works in the VoIP Gateway

Although SIP and VoIP Support IP Telephony, they are Not the Same Thing. So, let’s explore the differences between VoIP and SIP.

VoIP=Voice Over Internet Protocol

The term VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol.  It is a broad technology that covers any phone calls made over the Internet, as opposed to traditional telephone lines. Other terms that are used interchangeably with VoIP include, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and various others. They all describe the fact that the Internet is used to digitally transmit the voice signal to another telephone or endpoint. 
VoIP is a very flexible and customizable phone service system with a lot of different options for users. Having a VoIP plan gives you options and flexibility that you often can’t find in a traditional plan.

Understanding SIP 

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a communications protocol that is widely used for managing multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls. SIP, therefore is one of the specific protocols that enable VoIP. It defines the messages that are sent between endpoints and it governs establishment, termination and other essential elements of a call. SIP can be used to transmit information between just two endpoints or many. In addition to voice, SIP can be used for video conferencing, instant messaging, media distribution and other applications. 
SIP technology, however, is fast becoming the dominant method of deploying VoIP. Among the benefits that indicate how SIP works better in VoIP are the reduced costs it offers, the augmented efficiency, as well as its scalability compared to older systems.

How SIP Works?

If you want to communicate through SIP, you need the following:
A SIP account: You can begin by inquiring an account and address from the ITSP-Internet Telephony Service Provider, or it is obtained from a configured IP-PBX.
A SIP client: SIP client is basically a program and App that can be installed on your mobile device or computer, or it can be the device such as IP-phone and VoIP Gateway.
You can find various types of SIP clients in the market or provided by the VoIP service providers to use their services. These clients are designed to work for SIP. 

How SIP works step by step in New Rock VoIP gateway?

The following are the recommended step-by-step procedure quoting some of the gateway models from New Rock:
Step 1. Get the VoIP gateway IP address.
-  Connect the analog phone to the gateway FXS port.
-  Pick up the handset and dial “##” to hear the device’s current IP address and port number
NOTE: For full FXO gateway, you can download Finder App to get the device’s IP address. By default, the HX4G/ MX8A gateway can use DHCP to get IP address, while MX60E/MX120G is the static IP address:
Step 2. Make sure that the PC and the device are on the same network segment
Step 3. Log in to the gateway configuration web GUI.
-  Open the browser, enter the gateway IP address that was queried, log in to the gateway configuration interface.
-  HX4G/MX8G, for example, select Administrator in the user bar drop-down box then enter the device password in the password bar (the default password is a random 8 digits number found on the label of the device while the default password for MX60E is mx60 and for MX120G is mx120)
-  Enter the CAPTCHA as shown on the log in page.
Step 4. Register the gateway to the SIP server.
-  Select Basic > SIP from the configuration screen, enter SIP server address, select per line to register and save.
-  Select Line > Configuration, select the line you need, click on the registration, enter the registered user name and password then save.
Step 5. Verify that the gateway registration was successful.
-  Select Call Status > Call status from configuration interface, check the registration status of the line name and number, and show the registration is successful, the configuration is completed.
NOTE: If the registration status shown has failed, recheck the following:
① The registered server address and port is correct.
② The registration of line you chose is open.
③ The registered user name and password is correct.
④ Check if the gateway can ping the SIP server.
